GAZIANTEP
A gazi is a defender of the faith, and this old town, known as Antep throughout the Ottoman period, earned the sobriquet "Gazi" in 1920, when the city mounted a staunch ten-month defense against the French, who were trying to lay claim to their slice of Turkey after World War I.
Although there are habitat evidences since the 4th millennium BCE the better documented history begins nearly 3000 years ago with the Assyrians. In 612 BCE the Persians took the area, beginning a long succession of domination by conquerors, including Alexander the Great.
