MT. ARARAT

Mt. Ararat is 16,940 feet high (5,165 m), the highest volcano in Turkey, you see its white cone while you are still far away. Mount Ararat dominates the landscape for miles around. It takes its name from the prophet Jeremiah's misspelling of the word Urartu.  The mountain has figured in legends since time began, most notably as the supposed resting place of Noah's Ark. The observation of vessel-shaped features in aerial photographs of Ararat caused a stir in the late 1950s. Expeditions found the features to be landsides and lava flows.  Nevertheless research continued and scientific teams from all over the world continue looking for the Ark. For more detail information about the research visit Ararat Reports

The volcano has not erupted in historic time. The most recent eruption was probably in the last 10,000 years.
