SANLIURFA

Sanliurfa (Glorious Urfa) has been at the cross roads of trade, war and religion throughout history. Talking about Urfa's history is too big a task to be undertaken in this page so we'll just focus on the most prominent attractions: the Pools of Abraham and the Archaeological Museum

The Pools of Abraham are an intricate canal system looking like something from the Arabian Nights. The origins of the pools are associated with the prophet Abraham. According to legend king Nimrud erected a satke at the foot of Urfa's citadel to burn Abraham, when he was thrown on to the flames, Jehovah, to stop the fire, opened a the spring that feeds the pools until today.  In the pools live the sacred carps which are strictly protected.
